History of Polyester and Microfiber
Unlike most fabrics, polyester was the result of scientific endeavors. Its roots go back to the 1930s when W.H. Carothers of DuPont discovered how to create fibers by combining alcohols with carboxyl acids. The technology was further developed by British scientists C.G. Ritchie and W.K. Birtwhistle in 1941, leading to the first commercial polyester fiber.
Polyester gained popularity due to its durability, wrinkle resistance, and comfort. In comparison, microfiber is a more recent innovation with origins debated among textile historians - some credit Japanese development in the 1970s, others point to English origins in the 1980s, while Swedish marketing in the 1990s also played a significant role.
Regardless of its exact origins, microfiber has established itself as an essential textile material valued for its practical features and performance advantages in industrial applications.
